The competitive wave energy landscape - what are the advantages of AMOG's solution? This design delivers: Simplicity. The structure is placed in position at about one metre below the surface of the water and it fluctuates in harmony, simultaneously and in correspondence with the movement of the wave, following it in shape, action and movement.
Owing to this movement, all the sections are forced to change their geometric shape according to the wave movement trough or crest , varying from parallelepiped to rhomboid, making the hydraulic piston retract or extend and therefore start the flow of working fluid.
The fluid moving inside the hydraulic system reaches sufficiently high speeds and pressures for exploitation. The working fluid drives a pressure turbine connected to a generator for the production of clean electrical energy. In addition, as an alternative or simultaneously, it may be used for connection to a pump, desalination device or various other mechanisms. The Wave Energy Prize , an month competition that advanced the energy capture potential of WECs, highlighted a variety of promising devices.
Grand-prize winner AquaHarmonics, for example, designed a point absorber, which demonstrated a five-fold increase in energy capture potential. Point absorbers are usually a two-part device. The surface portion moves faster than the submerged part, and the WEC converts that relative motion into electricity.
In short, ocean waves will move a WEC and that motion drives a generator that creates electricity. How machines take this motion of low-speed ocean waves with high energy content and convert them into the high-speed motion required for generators is not fully understood. Neither is how to do this economically and reliably, while also surviving harsh ocean conditions.
Buoys that generate energy by going up and down with the wave motion, the so-called point absorbers, are the most common wave energy conversion systems in deep water see section point absorbers. The energy yield is greatest when the buoy's resonance frequency is equal to the wave frequency. This means that the size of the point absorber does not really matter. Unfortunately, the practice is less favorable, on the one hand because the strong variability that is characteristic for sea conditions makes that resonance only occurs in exceptional cases, and on the other hand because the greatest energy output does not correspond to small wave amplitudes.
