Next, be sure that the front shifter is in the fully released position, then shift into the smallest rear cog. Thread the cable into the frame, tension it, and install it. Now test shifting. What the hell is a pick anyway, the pictures in the manual doesn't show any pick??? I have luckily installed the shifter cable for the read gear but that was out of pure luck that the cable went through the shifter. Trying to do the same with the front shifter and I'm stuck poking the cable like a sex maniac into the hole in the left shifter.
So can anyone please give me some advice on how to feed the cable the easy way into the shifter Post by coloclimber on Wed Jul 30, pm Its awful. Even the SRAM technical video on their website doesnt help much with this one.
These tips might help: -I usually take the lever off the bars so I can see it thread better and move the lever and cable independently. What a sense of accomplishment when I finally got it! Post by arcspin on Wed Jul 30, pm I agree that it is awful! My god, what were they thinking when they came up with this set up??? Thank you for your advise. I finally got the wire through the shifter using your two best advice. Post by yakk on Wed Jul 30, pm I had to do this procedure twice in the past week, so I feel your pain.
Glad you found a solution. FWIW, my method: I rolled back the hood and the tape to expose the shifter body, and once I had inserted the cable enough to see it sticking up near the bar tape, I simply used a pick to push it straight down into the channel while pushing on the feed, and it found the hole into the cable housing without too much fuss. Pull the hood cover forward to expose the clamp bolt. Hold the shift lever in the desired position and tighten the clamp bolt with the 4 mm hex.
Measure a length of brake cable housing that is long enough for the handlebars to rotate without pulling any cable housing from the housing stops. Pull the brake lever to the handle bar to expose the chamfered hole in the cable holder. Install a brake cable into the chamfered hole. Pull the cable to make sure the cable head is properly seated. Slide the brake housing on to the brake cable and then install the housing into the shift lever. Insert the cable into the cable stop followed by the housing.
To install the shift cable and housing, first select the shift cable routing that works best for your handlebar. Measure the shifter housing so it is long enough for the handlebars to rotate without pulling the housing out of the housing stop.
